North Macedonia
There are places you don't expect, and precisely for this reason, they surprise you even more. North Macedonia was exactly like that for me: a slow, authentic discovery, far from the most popular destinations and mass tourism.
I arrived almost by chance at Lake Ohrid and stayed there for about a month, together with my little dog. Over time, I learned to appreciate its peaceful rhythms, the days marked by walks along the water, and that sense of simplicity that really allows you to disconnect.
The town of Ohrid has a unique charm: brick houses, balconies overlooking the lake, cobbled streets, and views that seem to come from another era. And then there's the history, intertwined with everyday life: in the center, there are even the remains of an ancient amphitheater, almost hidden among the houses.
It is one of those places that do not overwhelm you with a thousand things to do, but that win you over slowly, day by day.

North Macedonia with your furry friend

In North Macedonia, there are many stray dogs living both in the most isolated areas and in the cities. Despite this, they are part of everyday life: a sort of local "mascot." People take care of them as they can, and in fact, they are often very friendly. My little dog used to play with them almost every day on the lakeshore.
That said, the country is not particularly pet-friendly.
I tend to take Italy as a reference (which is one of the most pet-friendly countries in Europe), where, for example, dogs can enter supermarkets with special shopping carts.
In North Macedonia, however, dogs are not allowed indoors: no bars, restaurants, or shops. This means arranging things differently: eating at home or staying on the outdoor terraces. These are often heated, but they are also the only spaces where smoking is still allowed, so be prepared for a bit of secondhand smoke too.
The city of Ohrid
Despite the limitations, Ohrid is absolutely worth the visit, with or without a dog.
The historic center is perfect for strolling through picturesque alleys, stopping for a coffee with a lake view, and enjoying a relaxed atmosphere. There are also many small beaches ideal for picnics, with the sound of the water and the sun reflecting on the lake.
Just a few minutes' walk from the center is a promontory surrounded by greenery, from which several trails depart offering spectacular views of the lake from above: views that change with every step and make each walk different. Along the route, you will encounter places rich in history, such as an ancient castle, a basilica overlooking the water, and small more secluded beaches, perfect for those seeking tranquility.
It is the ideal type of place if you love alternating moments of relaxation with walks in nature, without having to make long trips.

Lake Ohrid

Lake Ohrid is the true protagonist of this area, and you quickly understand why. The water is incredibly clear, with reflections that change throughout the day: from the deep blue of the morning to the golden hues of the sunset. It is one of those places where you find yourself simply stopping, looking, and breathing.
Walking along its banks becomes almost a daily ritual. Among small piers, hidden beaches, and wilder corners, there is always a new place to sit, read a book, or have a picnic.
To explore it thoroughly, you can rent a small private boat and take a tour of about an hour: a perfect way to discover the coast from a different perspective, while the captain tells stories and curiosities about the lake and the city. If you are curious to see what lies beneath the surface, there is also a kind of “mini submarine” that allows you to observe the seabed and aquatic life.
Thanks to its transparency, the lake is also perfect for diving. However, I went there in February… and I admit that the cold got the better of me 😄 But in spring and summer, it is truly an amazing experience.
The surrounding mountains
If the lake is the heart, the surrounding mountains are the wildest and most authentic soul of this destination.
Just a short distance from the center of Ohrid, you find yourself immersed in nature, surrounded by wide and silent landscapes. The paths often start almost suddenly, between houses or along the road, and quickly lead you away from the noise of the city.
I had rented a car, which makes everything much easier and allows you to explore even the less accessible areas. However, there are also public transport options that connect the main points, so it is possible to get around without a car, it just requires a little more organization.
